Named from the Greek echinos hedgehog, referring to the prickly ovary scales. With its origin in the United States, it was introduced to Europe in 1779. The leaves are rough to the touch and the flowers are purple-crimson on 3’ to 4’ stems. The cone shaped centers are deep mahogany red.
